Typography trends in 2018

Tue 1 Dec 2020

Like other graphic design elements, typography plays a vital role in setting the overall tone for a website or brand. Effective typography conveys a desired mood or feeling, attracts and holds the audience’s attention, and helps to create brand recognition. As a designer, keeping on top of evolving typography trends can help you stay ahead of the competition. Here are some of this year’s top fonts and type styles.

Colour fonts

Designers have been moving away from the more conservative type styles of the past few years toward bolder, more colourful options. With OpenType-SVG technology enabling the use of multiple colours, layers, and gradients in font files, designers are able to make full-colour fonts directly inside Photoshop or Illustrator – a development that is revolutionising the creative community. Brighter fonts help to attract user attention and are a great way to add brand identity to a design.

Serif fonts

Minimalist sans-serif typefaces are being replaced by the more ornate serif fonts in graphic design. Often seen as a throwback to the 1970s, serif fonts have a warmth and retro charm that are a sharp contrast to the sterile, minimalist fonts that have dominated the industry over the past few years. The rebrand of Chobani’s Greek Yogurt packaging is a prime example of this trend.

Cutouts and overlays

Bold, bright layered effects add a lot of visual interest to type designs and are becoming increasingly popular. Cutouts (allowing the background layer to show through the type design) and overlays (placing transparent lettering over a vivid photo, texture, or animation background) work best with large, simple lettering and limited other effects.

Handwritten style fonts

In addition to handwriting-style fonts, designers are increasingly using unique, hand-lettered logos that create a warm and welcoming feel to logos, websites, blogs, and product designs. When designed well, bespoke hand-drawn fonts can shape an entire brand identity (think Coca-Cola or Disney).

Custom fonts

Larger companies are beginning to set themselves apart from the competition by developing a custom font in house. Although this can be an expensive, time-consuming option, it’s a great way to ensure that your branding is unique and distinctive. As quality improves, the use of open source fonts is also becoming increasingly popular as a more cost-effective way to customise a project.
