Students on Falmouth Flexible’s Creative App Development MA met in Falmouth in July for their first Face-to-Face event, which included a series of creative workshops and networking opportunities, designed to bring them together and offer a wider industry context for their learning.
As part of the event, students attended the Agile on the Beach conference, a gathering of over 400 members of the agile community and 50 guest speakers. The Falmouth Flexible Creative App Development course has been built on Agile principles and methodologies so attending this conference allowed students to develop their understanding of Agile principles as well as giving them a chance to explore the latest thinking, methods and practices.During the event, attendees worked on a micro-project in collaboration with Falmouth Flexible Creative Event Management students. This involved creating an Internet of Things device that could be installed at an event like Agile on the Beach to gauge the delegates' appreciation of the event.
The Face-to-Face event also included a number of workshops where Creative App Development students were able to develop ideas together and learn new techniques and skills. In the Arduino workshop, participants were introduced to the Arduino platform and how it can be used to rapid-prototype hardware to support apps for home automation, internet of things, art installations and other physical computing contexts.
In the Immersive Media workshop, students had the chance to experience mixed reality and explore the potential of devices such as the Microsoft Hololens and HTC Vive and playtest some apps that utilise this hardware.
During a post conference retrospective, attendees from Falmouth Flexible discussed how the conference and workshops had contributed towards their understanding of agile app development.
And finally, the Creative App Development students ended their first face-to-face event by attending a party on one of Cornwall's famously beautiful beaches.
