Photography techniques and ideas to try in 2019

Tue 1 Dec 2020

The world of photography is constantly moving and evolving. As new styles and trends develop it’s important to keep an ear to the ground, whilst retaining the fundamentals of your own personal style.

Film has made a comeback

The number of photographers going back to film has grown exponentially in the past couple of years and online platforms and applications like Instagram and HUJI have become flourishing spaces encouraging this trend. Analog cameras are considered to be an amazing tool for improving technical and creative skills and the lack of opportunity to check the image immediately pushes photographers to learn how light affects every scene, rather than simply relying on trial and error.

The evolution of the drone

The drone certainly made waves in 2018 after the fiasco at Gatwick late during the year and continues to grow in popularity, with many amateur photographers being attracted to the medium. Once upon a time aerial photography was only available to the very wealthy. Today, drones can be purchased for half the price of a mobile phone. Travel and landscape photographers are the people benefitting the most from the innovation, though drones are increasingly crossing over into many other genres. If you are immersing yourself in this trend, make sure you know the legal restrictions of the locations you’re planning to shoot in.

A return for candid photography

In an age increasingly defined by modified images and fake news, people are starting to turn toward authenticity and realism. The desire for over-contrived postures and over-sexualised looks is fading in favour of gestures that feel genuine in genres such as fashion, wedding and portrait photography, to name just a few. Photographers are vacating the studio in favor of shoots on the street, allowing them to engage with everyday scenarios and whilst artificial light is still very much in use, the goal is to achieve the illusion of a natural light look.

Dramatic landscapes in place of minimalism

In recent years minimalism ruled the photography world, along with the world of art, technology, and fashion. Compositions were constructed around a principal subject that was isolated from its surroundings by leaving copious white space. However, in 2019 it is expected that a penchant for higher contrast levels and more vivid colours will continue to grow. This is reinforced by the 2019 Pantone Colour Of The Year ‘Living Coral,’ which Pantone described as filling ‘our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits and embodying our desire for playful expression’
